In a new environment, finally away from our overbearing parents… we’re still figuring out a lot of stuff. Laundry, where to get food, what parties we should avoid, etc. are all part of the college experience. We ballroom dancers aren’t that much different. To try to aid in the transition, we’ll give you some instructions up front, compiled from other articles on our website.

For more, feel free to peruse our FAQ Archives.

On Proper Attire [source]

I’m sure you’re happy to be rid of all the strict guidelines that go with high school, but you’ll have to stick to a similar dress code during lessons. The aim is to create an environment to minimize awkwardness of dancing with a total stranger, yet not as strict as a black-tie event. Check here for more specifics on dress code.

No Experience Necessary [source]

Welcome one and all, from all different backgrounds! We don’t care if you can’t find the beat or if your style of dancing is the cabbage patch. What we do care about is your willingness to learn.

Dues [source]

As of Spring 2013 we are not collecting dues.

What’s the rule on partners? [source]

You don’t need to come with one. We rotate partners often for several reasons, an abundance of female dancers being one of them. Our male dancers are always dancing with someone new as our instructor introduces the latest move, step-by-step. Surplus female dancers have the option to dance alone or with another girl, at least until the next rotation.

Meeting Times [source]

When and where we meet changes from semester to semester, but a few things remain constant: (1) we generally meet in the SRWC, and (2) our meetings are generally Wednesday evenings. Follow this link to get the most current meeting time and location.

The Typical Meeting [source]

Since you’re undoubtedly still wondering what to expect from your first meeting, here’s a little something to get you started. If you arrive early, you’ll find many officers mingling and our instructor preparing for the coming lesson. We’ll begin with our Bronze (beginner) class by reviewing the prior week’s step(s), continuing with new choreography (one to three moves, depending on the intricacy), and leave time to practice what we’ve learned.

Following the Bronze lesson, we’ll begin our Silver (advanced) class. Similar to Bronze, we’ll first review prior week’s lesson, then add new stuff, then allow for practice time. What’s different in the Silver class is a fast-paced curriculum, introducing more challenging choreography and technique.

Depending on the room reservations, we may have have open studio time after the lessons for socializing, asking questions, and general fun. During this time, meetings with competitors, the PR committee, or other groups within the club may opt to meet.
